Frequently Asked Questions > Questions for a Doula > Will a doula make my partner feel unnecessary?

A doula is a supportive presence for both the mother and father. She guides the couple, provides reassurance that the pain of labor is normal, and based on her experience with birth helps parents gauge the progress of labor.  She understands that this is the father's birth experience too, and helps him to feel confident to participate in the way that feels most comfortable for him.  Practically, this can mean anything from allowing him the space to pray or provide emotional support, to helping him apply comfort measures effectively.
